Position: The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a full-time tenure-track, 10-month Assistant Professor in Dance Education in the Department of Dance beginning August 2019. The Department of Dance seeks a faculty member with a vibrant artistic, scholarly, and performance practice in K-12 dance. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with and inspire a diverse population and be sensitive to the education needs of these students.
Qualifications: Earned PhD or MFA in Dance, or terminal equivalency with a focus in Dance Education. Laban Movement Analysis (CMA) certificate, K-12 state teaching certificate, or somatic practice preferred. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the Instructor rank and all degree requirements must be completed by August 1, 2019. Demonstrated success and dedication to teaching at the university level including evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Interdisciplinary experience, evidence of collaboration and team work, and record of or strong potential for creative research/scholarship. Evidence of strong pedagogical commitment to teaching and development of curriculum in dance education and related fields including the development of curriculum that addresses diversity and inclusion. Engagement through performing, writing or choreography needed. Experience developing Dance education approaches that will be beneficial to a diverse and dynamic dance student population including those studying to become generalists in dance education as well as potential master's degree candidates in dance education.
Responsibilities: The Department of Dance seeks an outstanding teacher and movement practitioner who will contribute to the development of the PreK-12 Dance Education Concentration and its interface with the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography. The individual will be expected to serve in a leadership role. Additional responsibilities include program recruitment, managing student cohorts, curriculum development, outreach to PreK-12 school partners and educational organizations, and supervising graduate/undergraduate field experiences and student internships/teaching. Other duties commensurate with qualifications and departmental needs. Teach major and non-major courses in dance, dance education, research and advocacy, dance pedagogy, and other dance courses as needed. The candidate will develop/continue a distinguished scholarly record that contributes to the national conversation in dance education, maintain a productive teaching agenda, and be a contributor to the Towson University dance program. The candidate will engage in appropriate service to the Department, College, the University and the profession and collaboration with colleagues on achieving departmental/programmatic goals and objectives. Department of Dance: The Department of Dance http://www.towson.edu/dance. The BFA Dance program at Towson University provides a strong liberal arts education combined with rigorous technique-based training that supports individual development of the dancer, artist and dance educator. Students are prepared to enter the professional world as dancers, choreographers, teachers and leaders in the arts. Graduates of our programs have gone on to be principal dancers and choreographers in prestigious companies, owners and artistic directors at private studios, and teachers. Others pursue advanced degrees. Double majoring is popular in the areas of exercise science, psychology, mass communication, business, family studies and others. The department enrolls a diverse student population of approximately 90 students served by 9 full-time and over 10 part-time faculty. The National Associate of Schools of Dance (NASD) accredited program is housed in the Center for the Arts.
